This sketch was inspired by the pet adoption day (BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters”) we recently had in my community. It is bittersweet to walk in and see all the beautiful pets waiting for their forever home. Seeing their reactions when picked is uplifting and joyful. At the same time, I noticed the ones that were still waiting. All the volunteers in the shelter are amazing people. They work hard to keep the pet’s spaces clean and their spirits high. It does work for some, but for others, they remain scared and lonely. There was one small little dog that was absolutely terrified, his face said as much—a beautiful two-year-old boy. I’m happy to report he was adopted that day. He went home with a loving paw parent who was overjoyed with him. Thank goodness! Taking on a pet is a huge responsibility but as rewarding as can be. My twelve-year-old dachshund, Kiwi, who we adopted two years ago, is now a brother to a beautiful girl beagle, who keeps him young. Her name is Mabel, and she was one of the rescues that day—a special thanks to the organization that encourages more families to adopt pets.
